The Economic Crisis Essay Right now in America, we are in an economic crisis that is slowly tearing the seams that holds the countrys banking system together. This recession affects everyone from single families to giant corporations because of the nature of the crisis. It began slowly with it quickly picking up the pace, and now with all the new policies in effect the end is now in sight. It seems that everyone in America played their part in a tedious game that only took a matter of time to come crashing down around all of us. Because of the unstable economy, companies were forced to downsize their employee work force or close their doors. The loss of a job threatened many working class and middle class families with the threat of bankruptcy, because of the increasing accumulation of consumer debt. Jobs were hard to find; in addition, many people without a choice, were forced to sell their homes; many of them moved to states where the cost of living was lower. Most of them took low paying jobs to support their family. The unfortunate ones took from seven months to a year before they could find a decent job. Others who were fortunate could sit and wait or started their own business, and the rest either took out a home equity loan or refinance to lower their mortgage payment. In this paper I will discuss the causes of the economic crisis in depth, the key players in the implementing new policies to pull the United States from the recession, and the different policies that are now affecting not just the U.S. economy but the world economy as well. This crisis was years in the making, but because of the dot com assets many people were not noticing the downward spiral that had started before September 2001. Some of the key factors that caused the economic crisis are: a glut of savings from Asia, bad loans, boom and bust of the housing market, lack of capital reserves, and the reselling of bad loans. These factors not only affect the US, but have been felt by countries all over the world because of bad lending practices by financial institutions. As each factor is explained the new policies address each one of them in a different manner. As the US economy was booming in the late 1990s the countries in Asia decided to plow the US with a glut of their savings (Krugman, 2009). This helped to create the dot com bubble and keep the interest rates at low percentage. This encouraged high levels of consumer spending in US. It also encouraged a large current account deficit in the US. It also encouraged an asset bubble, because it was cheap to borrow and this encouraged unsustainable lending. After the events of September 11, 2001, Federal Reserve was able to use this money to keep interest rates below 5%. Prior to September 11, 2001 the dot com bubble burst then the events at the World Trade Center lead to the US heading to a recession. But, to keep the US out of a recession the Federal Reserve responded with by cutting interest rates to 1% this was the lowest level of interest rates for a long time (Samuelson, 2010). Low interest rates encouraged people to get loans from financial intuitions. Because people were more inclined to buy a house with their loans, this led to the boom and the bust of the housing market. As house prices began to rise, mortgage companies relaxed their lending criteria and tried to capitalize on the booming property market. Mortgage companies actively sold mortgages to people with bad credit, low incomes often first generation immigrants. This is called subprime mortgage. By definition subprime mortgage is giving loans to borrowers who typically are not qualified because of their higher risks: income level, work status, and credit history. This also puts the borrowers into a higher rate category than the prime rate (BAJAJ, 2008). Prior to 2006, the housing market seemed to be going up for long time. Noticing this trend, borrowers thought that everything was fine and refinancing will solve any future problems. In 2006-2007, the housing market moderately cooled down. Many unable to refinance because of higher interest rate of Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARM), found themselves in a deep bind. Massive defaults and foreclosures soon followed. In March 2007, the U.S value subprime mortgage is about $1.3 trillion; $7.5 million of that is bad. The subprime mortgage is what eventually caused the housing market to crash. The crash of the housing market was due to borrowers unable to pay mortgages, millions of borrowers houses face repossession. Another problem includes many homeowners were not willing to sell at a lower market prices (BAJAJ, 2008). High-risk borrowers ability to obtained easy credit and speculation of the then rising housing market, fueled the housing boom. Financial institutions are mostly to blame for the housing market crash. Eager to grow their industry in the name of profits, they were willing to provide high-risk loan options and incentives. Another part of the cause of the housing crisis is consumerism. Elevated by yours truly, President George W. Bush who ask Americans to spend more to get out of economic slowdown. Another main cause of the economic crisis is lack of capital reserves. The banks thought that they could use credit creation to process loans to borrowers. Credit creation is when banks employ what is termed a fractional reserve policy, meaning they can literally take in $1 on deposit and lend out $10 (L Jacobo Rodriguez, 2003). Basically the bank creates money supposedly up to 10 times what they have on deposit and capital. In the boom years, banks pursued a reckless dash for growth. This meant lending a high % of deposits. Therefore, when they suffered bad losses, they had no reserves to call upon. This led to a dramatic drop in bank loans which had ripple effects throughout the economy. Its fraudulent because banks are lending out money held on deposit which is supposed to be on demand and are effectively making money on money they do not have, and have no right to use. Due to this fraudulent behavior most banks have failed because depositors suddenly show up to withdraw all their money which the bank does not have. The final thing that caused the economic crisis is reselling of bad loans. Mortgage companies and banks were left with a series of bad debts they had to write off. Most of the bad loans originated in the US subprime mortgage market. Then the US mortgage companies and banks thought it was a good idea to sell these bad loans to different banks around the world. However, these were bundled and repackaged into collaterized debt obligations. They were given triple a ratings and bought by banks around the world. Therefore, when mortgage defaults occurred in the US, the losses were felt by the whole global banking system because most banks had some exposure to these bad loans. During the aftermath of the economic crisis there were some key players and each had a role to get the economy back on track. The key players that affect the policies that are implemented after the economic crisis are the President, the Congress, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Each of these people or group will affect the policies and how they are enforced to the citizens. As the election day of 2008 was approaching the citizens made some changes that may be for the best or could hinder the overall effect of the plan to get out of this crisis. With the unemployment rate climbing higher, and as the election for some of the key players in Washington on the line, many voters were ready for a change. As voters cast their vote and the votes were counted the new President was announced. The 44th President of the United States was named Barack Obama, with his new position he put a lot of legislations into play within his first couple weeks of taking over the Oval Office. The president is responsible for the concern of such things as unemployment, high prices, taxes, business profits, and the general prosperity of the country. The president does not control the economy, but is expected to help it run smoothly. In regards to the economy the president only has the constitutional authority to select the individuals that will be making the policies that affect the economy directly, has the power to determine the new fiscal year budget and how the money is divided, and has the authority to enforce new laws that Congress has made in regards to the economy. The president also has the authority to make suggestion to the Congress in regards to any new bills or laws that he feel should be passed (Constitutional Powers, 2003). President Obamas central focus is on stimulating economic recovery and helping America emerge a stronger and more prosperous nation. The current economic crisis is the result of many years of irresponsibility, both in government and in the private sector. President Obamas role in repairing the economy is to enforce the new policies that have been made and to make sure that all parties involved are abiding by the new regulations. As the new President took office the Congress was gearing up to make some new policy changes. The Congress only has the responsibility to write new bills and laws that will affect how the economy is ran in the future. The Congress has the constitutional authority to change any legislation that will help put the economy back on track. Currently the economy is top priority for all Congress members and they are making sure all relevant legislation gets passed in a timely manner. Upon the election of President Obama his first act was to appoint a new Secretary of the Treasury. The new Secretary is Tim Geithner (Secretary, n.d.). He is responsible for promoting economic prosperity and ensuring the financial security of the United States. The Department is responsible for a wide range of activities such as advising the President on economic and financial issues, encouraging sustainable economic growth, and fostering improved governance in financial institutions (Roles of the Treasury, n.d.). The Secretary of the Treasury does not really have any constitutional authority as far as making new policies that will affect the economy. Mr. Geithner has the position to oversee the United States Treasury and the money that is allocated to bring the U.S. out of a recession. The current chairman of the Federal Reserve is Ben Bernanke, he is jointly responsible for the conducting the nations monetary policy by influencing money and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of full employment and stable prices (Chairman, n.d.). He also supervises and regulates banking institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the nations banking and financial system and to protect the credit rights of consumers. Mr. Bernanke also maintains the stability of the financial system and containing systemic risk that may arise in financial markets, and providing certain financial services to the U.S. government, to the public, to financial institutions, and to foreign official institutions, including playing a major role in operating the nations payments systems (Responsibilities, n.d.). Mr. Bernanke has no constitutional authority, however his opinion on the economy and the value of the U.S. dollar or assets are valued greatly up on Capitol Hill (Hamilton, 2010). Immediately after the new administration took over the White House, there were several acts that were passed by the Congress, and signed by the new President. These legislations will help keep the economy on track and reverse the years of irresponsibility of the federal government and the banks (Economy, n.d.). These acts will also help average citizens keep their homes and their current jobs. Most of these acts will help create millions of jobs and help small business by giving them tax breaks. They will also monitor the Wall Street and banks to make sure they are being held accountable for their actions to the average citizen. As each of the key players had their own opinions about the different policies that make up the way they run the economy, they came together to form amendments to the monetary policy, fiscal policy, and laws governing businesses since the collapse of the economy. The only change that was made to the monetary policy is that they will reinvest principal payments from its securities holdings. The changes to the fiscal policy include tax cuts for some and freezing the pay of government employees. There were many laws that were put into effect to govern businesses and their hiring practices and other items as far as how they were ran. Each of the key actors are responsible for the enforcement of these acts or bills and monitoring of the other key people to make sure that no one taking advantage of the system and the new bills. Each of these acts, I feel are strong and will help to give the economy the boost that is required to help it get stable. I know that a lot of people feel that it is not helping, but I like to remind people it took us more than 10 years to get into the mess that we are in. No one can expect for the current situation to be gone in less than 2 years. I do however; believe that the federal government should not have bailed out the homeowners. These individuals knew that they could not afford the homes before they bought them, and after the economy got bad they expected someone to give them a handout. The only thing that I can see as a weakness for any of these policies is the enforcement of them. Each policy is unique, but each has to be enforced in a certain way. Although I am glad to see the economy doing a bounce back, I am more concerned that the citizens will not give our government enough time to make sure it is stable again. Everyone is so set in blaming the President for the economy, when the only people that really need to be blamed are we. In conclusion, I feel that each key player has their own set goals on where they would like to see the economy, but are willing to do whatever is necessary to stabilize the economy. I also think that each policy has been set up to help boost the economy back to its original place since if the U.S. economy is experiencing difficulties then the world economy will be faced with its own problems. The fluorescent lights blinded me as I tried to open my eyes. Where am I, I thought to myself? I jolted my head back and forth desperately trying to figure out where I was. I heard a voice say, "Hold him down, we are almost there." A sharp pain ran down my back to my feet. All I could see were lights flashing and shadows moving in all directions. The rolling bed that I was on stopped abruptly and a mask was placed over my face. I tried not to breathe, but in less than a second I was unconscious. In no apparent order multiple scenes began to flash through my head. My thoughts turned to nothing, and for one minute all I saw in my mind was an everlasting black hole accompanied by a single deafening beep. Suddenly, I awoke to the clanging sound of my alarm clock. I must have had a bad dream I thought to myself as I turned on the faucet to wash my face. It was eleven in the morning, and everyone in my family was sitting in the living room watching television. I wasn't quite sure what the day was. Everything was all too familiar. I figured it was Sunday, but I wasn't sure. The smell of pancakes and bacon floated through the air from the kitchen to where I was standing in the living room. I made my way past my sisters and my mom and sat down at the bar in the kitchen hoping my dad would serve me breakfast so that I would not have to get up to get it. "Good morning," I said to my dad as I sat down. He was standing with his back to me as he flipped over some pancakes. "I see you're up bright and early this morning," my dad said as he turned to look at me. I chuckled as I replied, "Yup sure am." Then I added, "Hey dad, who won the Texas ATM game?" Memories of my Childhood Days My first recollection of my childhood is the day I down the stairs when I was three years old. I was so happy that time I cried and cried for nearly an hour in spite of my parents’ attempts at comforting me. Finally, I quietened down when I was given ice- cream and chocolates. Luckily, I was not hurt because the stairs is not to steep. My days were happy ones before I started going to school, as I had good neighbours to play with me.I was playing from morning till evening. We played games outdoors like Batu Seremban,Police entry and Lumba Lari. There were also other games to occupy our time until my mother bring a rattan to call me back.. At the age of five years, I had to attend kindergarten and this turned out to be quite an ordeal for me. To begin with, I felt very sad having to leave my mother and go off each morning to be amongst strangers. I cried and wanted my mother around, much to my teacher’s displeasure. As the days went by, however, I made friends easily in class and found company. I became happy again and actually looked forward to leaving the house each morning. I still remember those days when I was learning to ride a bicycle. I fell and bruised myself several times but I never gave up. Finally, I was able to join my friends going around the neighbourhood on my bike. Another fond memory is the end-of-year concert held at the kindergarten. I was chosen to play the role of Princess in the play, ‘Princess and Gunung Ledang’, and I became a celebrity overnight receiving lots of compliments for my performance. I now realise what a wonderful childhood I have had and at times wish I could relive those days.

The terms color blind and diversity are widely used in affirmative action but they are not synonymous. Applied properly, color blind should be taken to mean without distinction to color. This means that the policies such as affirmative action should neither advance nor protect the interests of any race. As compared to diversity, this is understood to provide the necessary preferential treatment in order to advance the interests of all races, being color blind is not related to racial relations but instead advocates the lack of any racial undertones.To arrive at a better understanding of how these terms work it is important to briefly discuss affirmative action. Affirmative action has been praised and pilloried as the answer to racial inequality. First introduced by President Kennedy in 1961, â€Å"Affirmative action† was designed as a method of reducing the discrimination that had remained despite the civil rights laws and constitutional guarantees.It was a method that was put in place as a â€Å"Temporary Measure to Level the Playing Field† through the offering of the same opportunities to all Americans. As the video shows, the struggle for racial equality has taken different paths in American history. For some, it has mean equal opportunity and righting of a wrong long since committed, for others it remains a constant struggle not only for survival but for recognition.There have been several violations that have disenfranchised many but this clear violation of the Constitution prompted many to create a landmark law that will turn the tide once and for all. It was â€Å"Affirmative Action† that was supposed to save America from the evils of racism and discrimination but this directive failed and in fact it even backfired and instead of helping the oppressed it made them look less worthy of respect as ever before.As such, it is clear that being color blind, while different from encouraging diversity, is oftentimes interchanged and can have disastrous results. These concepts, however, are not mutually exclusive and may co-exist under the proper circumstances. It must be remembered that in order for Civil Rights plans such as Affirmative Action to work there must be a fine balance to encourage racial diversity but at the same time not lead to discrimination of other races.

List of Government Shutdowns In United States politics, â€Å"government shutdowns† occur whenever Congress fails to pass or the President of the United States refuses to sign or vetoes legislation funding the operation of some or all government agencies. Under the Antideficiency Act of 1982, the federal government must â€Å"shutdown† the affected agencies by both furloughing non-essential personnel and curtailing agency activities and services that do not directly relate to national security. The dispute between the Democrats and the Republicans was over disparate economic forecasts and whether the Clinton White House budget would result in a deficit or not.   Weaponized Shutdowns Occasionally, both Congress and presidents use government shutdowns as a way of accomplishing political goals not directly related to larger budgetary concerns like reducing the national debt or deficit. For example, in 2013, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives forced a lengthy shutdown in an unsuccessful attempt to get Democratic President Barack Obama to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The Border Wall Shutdown of 2019 The third shutdown during the Donald Trump presidency began at midnight on December 22, 2018, when funding for nearly a quarter of the federal government ran out. The shutdown was triggered when Congress and President Trump were unable to agree on the inclusion in the spending bill of some $5.7 billion requested by President Trump for the construction of an additional section of immigration security wall or fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico. According to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, the $5.7 billion requested by President Trump would allow for the addition of about 234 miles of steel fencing to 580 miles already in place, leaving about 1,140 miles of the 1,954-mile long border still not fenced. In a televised address to the nation on January 8, 2019, President Trump warned that unless Congress agreed to include the funding, he would declare a national emergency allowing him to bypass Congress by diverting existing funds intended for other purposes to build the wall. However, after a meeting between Trump and House and Senate Democratic leaders on January 9 failed to reach a compromise, the shutdown continued. At midnight on Saturday, January 12, 2019, the 22-day-long shutdown became the longest in U.S. history. An estimated 800,000 federal employees- including Border Patrol officers, TSA agents, and air traffic controllers- were either working without pay or had been sent home on unpaid furlough. Though Congress had passed a bill on January 11 ensuring that unpaid employees would receive full back pay after the shutdown ended, that end remained nowhere in sight. On January 19, the 29th day of the shutdown, President Trump offered Democrats a deal to end it. In return for congressional approval of a $7 billion border security package, including $5.7 billion for the border wall, the president offered to extend for three years the DACA- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. DACA is an expired Obama-era policy allowing eligible persons who entered the United States illegally as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit in the U.S.   Democrats quickly rejected the proposal, arguing that it did not offer a permanent renewal of the DACA program and still included funding for the border wall. Democrats again refused to further talks until President Trump ended the government shutdown. By January 24, the then 34-day-long partial government was costing U.S. taxpayers more than $86 million a day in back pay promised to more than 800,000 furloughed workers, according to Government Executive magazine, based on salary data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Agreement Temporarily Reopens Government In at least a temporary solution, President Trump, on January 25, announced that he had struck a deal with Democratic leaders in Congress to allow the government to reopen until February 15 without including funding for the construction of any additional border barrier. Negotiations of border wall funding were to continue during the three-week period. The President stressed that a border wall remained a necessity for national security and that if Congress did not agree to fund it by the February 15 deadline, he either reinstate the government shutdown or declare a national emergency allowing existing funds to be used for the purpose. Shutdown Averted, but National Emergency Declared On February 15, 2019, President Trump signed a compromise Homeland Security spending bill averting another shutdown However, the bill provided only $1.375 billion for 55 miles of new border fencing, far short of the $5.7 billion he had requested for 234 miles of new solid steel walls. At the same time, the president declared a national emergency redirecting $3.5 billion from the Defense Department’s military construction budget to the construction of new border wall, and signed executive orders redirecting $600 million from the Treasury Departments drug forfeiture fund, and $2.5 billion from the Defense Department’s drug interdiction program for the same purpose.   A Fourth Trump Wall Shutdown Loomed On March 11, 2019, President Trump sent Congress a $4.7 trillion spending proposal for the government’s 2020 budget that included another $8.6 billion for U.S.-Mexico border wall construction. Bringing the threat of a fourth government shutdown of the Trump presidency, Democratic lawmakers immediately vowed to block further border wall funding. In a joint statement, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reminded the president of the â€Å"widespread chaos† that had â€Å"hurt millions of Americans† during the 34-day border wall shutdown from December 22, 2018, to January 24, 2019. â€Å"The same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again. We hope he learned his lesson,† wrote Pelosi and Schumer. By law, Congress had until October 1, 2019, to approve the 2020 budget.   More  Recent Major Government Shutdowns The most recent government major shutdowns before 2018 came in the 1996 fiscal year, during the Clinton administration. The first government shutdown of the Clinton administration lasted five full days from Nov. 13 through Nov. 19, 1995, according to the Congressional Research Service. The Chemical Composition of Rubbing Alcohol One of the types of alcohol you can buy over the counter is rubbing alcohol, which is used for disinfection and may be applied to the skin to produce a cooling effect. Do you know the chemical composition of rubbing alcohol? It is a mixture of denatured alcohol, water, and agents added to make the alcohol unpalatable to drink. It may also include colorants. There are two common types of rubbing alcohol. Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol Most rubbing alcohol is made from isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol in water. It is common to find isopropyl rubbing alcohol at concentrations from 68% alcohol in water up to 99% alcohol in water. The 70% rubbing alcohol is highly effective as a disinfectant. Additives make this alcohol bitter-tasting, to try to prevent people from drinking it. Isopropyl alcohol is toxic, in part because the body metabolizes it into acetone. Drinking this alcohol can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, central nervous system depression, organ damage, and potentially coma or death. Ethyl Alcohol Rubbing Alcohol The other type of rubbing alcohol consists of 97.5-100% denatured ethyl alcohol or ethanol with water. Ethyl alcohol is naturally less toxic than isopropyl alcohol. In fact, it is the alcohol that naturally occurs in wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages. However, the alcohol is denatured or made undrinkable in rubbing alcohol, both to control its use as an intoxicant and because the alcohol has not been purified to make it safe to drink. In fact, in the US, additives make it as toxic as isopropyl alcohol. Rubbing Alcohol in the UK In the United Kingdom, rubbing alcohol goes by the name surgical spirit. The formulation consists of a mixture of ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. Rubbing Alcohol in the US In the United States, rubbing alcohol made using ethanol must conform to Formula 23-H, which specifies it consists of 100 parts by volume of ethyl alcohol, 8 parts by volume of acetone, and 1.5 parts by volume of methyl isobutyl ketone (MSDS sheet). The remainder of the composition includes water and denaturants and may include colorants and perfume oils. Rubbing alcohol made using isopropanol is regulated to contains at least 355 mg of sucrose octaacetate (MSDS sheet) and 1.40 mg of denatonium benzoate per 100 ml volume. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol also contains water, stabilizer and may contain colorants. Twelfth Night is one of William Shakespeare’s so-called transvestite comedies that features a female disguising herself as a young man. My name is Ruby; I am a red blood cell. I am a dazzling ruby red color (hence my name) with a small area of inner pallor and I am very small: only about 6  µm in diameter. I get my red color from a protein chemical called hemoglobin, which is bright red. Hemoglobin not only gives me my beautiful color, it also contains the element iron, which makes it a good vehicle for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide. I have a very important role in the circulatory system of your body. Actually, it is probably the most important of all the blood cells. I carry oxygen to all parts of your body and tissues and I also return carbon dioxide from your tissues to your lungs. So I bet you are wondering how I do this very important role! I enter the blood vessels through the heart’s main artery called the aorta making sure that I am full of oxygen. The forceful contraction of your heart’s left ventricle forces me into your aorta which then branches into many smaller arteries, which run throughout your body. The inside layer of your artery is very smooth, allowing me to flow quickly. The outside layer of your artery is very strong, allowing me to flow forcefully. I enter the capillaries full of oxygen, where the oxygen and nutrients are released. The waste products are collected and the waste-rich blood flows into your veins in order to circulate back to your heart and then allow the exchange of gases in your lungs. I eventually pass through your kidneys, which filter much of the waste from the blood. I also pass through your small intestine. From the small intestine I meet with many of my family and friends that are also blood and we all collect in the portal vein that passes through your liver. Your liver filters sugars from me and stores them for later. As I pass through your lungs, oxygen molecules attach to the hemoglobin and when I pass through your body tissue, the hemoglobin releases the oxygen to the cells. Then the empty hemoglobin molecules bond with the tissue’s carbon dioxide or other waste gases, transporting it away. After being in your lungs I have fresh oxygen and lots of it! I then enter your pulmonary veins and then return to your heart, re-entering through your left atrium. Then I pass through a one-way valve into your left ventricle where I will exit your heart through your main artery, called the aorta. Your left ventricle’s contraction forces the blood into the aorta and the blood begins its journey  throughout the body once again and starts the entire process over again. The man in Jack London’s â€Å"To Build a Fire† went into the cold prepared for nothing, he felt that he was above nature and it could not affect him. Chris McCandless in Jon Krakauer’s â€Å"Into The Wild† went into the wild unprepared for the conditions he was about to face. As a person who read the writings of Jack London, his death seems somewhat ironic. â€Å"To Build a Fire† by Jack London brings out the irony even more, we see how London wrote and how it relates to how Chris died. Chris McCandless is a person who did not believe in rules of society. He believed that he was above rules. He even felt he could defeat nature; he went into the wild expecting to come out alive while he lived on what nature gave him. â€Å"Alaska has long been a magnet for dreamers and misfits, people who think the unsullied enormity of the Last Frontier will patch all the holes in their lives† (Krakauer, 6). This is exactly what Chris was trying to do when he went into the Alaskan wilderness. He wanted to escape the rules and suffering he faced in society. Jim Gallien recalled, â€Å"He wasn’t carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip† (Krakauer, 5). The man in â€Å"To Build a Fire† went to go meet his friends in the cold with nothing to protect him or keep him warm except the clothes on his back, and a dog that accompanied him. Chris and the man both went into the wilderness underprepared for the challenges they would face. Chris read Jack London throughout his life, he knew about his stories and this is how he learned about the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, but as he read he should have also learned of the dangers. Even though he read these stories by Jack London he still went into the wild unprepared. Chris McCandless spent most of his life in a warm climate. He was born in California, grew up in Virginia, and went to college in Georgia. Chris has never experienced anything relatively close to the Alaskan climate. Through reading stories about people experiencing the Alaskan wilderness Chris should have learned about the dangers that people faced in the cold temperature. The man was not scared of the cold at all, he felt as if he was above it and ended up dying. This shows the dangers of undermining the climate of the north and Chris did the same. He tried to live off of the land that was barren. The man was not concerned with â€Å"the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all—made no impression on the man† (London). The man in â€Å"To Build a Fire† was a representation of rational thinking, and how people in society believe mankind is more powerful than the world. This thinking was evident in Chris’s life. He felt that he was above the laws of the government. He did what he wanted, â€Å"On December 2, he reached the Morelos Dam and the Mexican border. Worried that he would be denied entry because he was carrying no identification, he sneaked into Mexico by paddling through the dam’s open floodgates and shooting the spillway below† (Krakauer, 25). There are resemblances between the qualities of the man and Chris McCandless. Chris’s death was not ironic but the reason he died was ironic. To Build a Fire† is a story about a man who is a very rational thinker who died because he felt he was better than nature and it could not kill him, the dog he traveled with lived because it relied on instincts. Chris went into the wild with a mindset similar to this man’s mindset. This is what brought out the irony of Chris’s death, he was an avid reader of Jack London and by reading his stories he should have been able to conclude that in order to survive in this climate he needed to be more prepared for difficult situations than he was.
